Social sustainability includes two main areas: housing for all and amenities.
Housing for all
No one should have to leave their neighbourhood because of a lack of housing options.
Whether that’s a young couple starting a family and needing a bigger house, or empty nesters looking to downsize, our citizens shouldn’t have to move neighbourhoods because of a lack of options.
By allowing people to stay in the communities they love the social fabric of those communities is strengthened.
Recreation and community centres need a certain level of population to survive. As the least dense area of Edmonton, our mature communities need to encourage more residents to move in so that these amenities can be sustained.
Having a place to go for a workout or a place to get together for community events does wonders for strengthening the social fabric of a neighbourhood, and infill can bolster both.
